Many dealers struggle with the best way to recruit salespeople. Before starting any sales team recruiting you need to know:
- “Why do I need more salespeople?”
- “What type of sales team do I want?”
Generally speaking, dealerships need more salespeople because they don’t hold on to the ones they have for one reason or another, either through lack of training or support or because they hired the wrong people in the first place! Dealers that I have seen through the years, usually are recruiting reactively instead of proactively, because they don’t have enough sales people!
Why would a dealership hire the wrong people in the first place? Usually, because they are recruiting reactively instead of proactively. They would rather have “bodies” to at least say hello to the customers coming on their lot instead of not having enough qualified sales people. So someone saying hello to the customer is surely better than no one talking to the customer, right? WRONG!
Recruiting proactively will allow you to hire the right people first, instead of hiring people to “throw up on the wall” and waiting to see who sticks (spaghetti hiring). Recruiting proactively will allow you to answer the second question, “What type of sales team do I want?” with the response: “A well-qualified Team!”
